    General Questions

Q0.1 What is this list all about?
    Short answer: Olympus photography.
    Long answer: To come....
    Q0.2 Who can subscribe?
Any user with an email account can subscribe to the list.
Q0.3 Who can post messages to the list?

Only SUBSCRIBED email addresses can post messages to the list. If you have multiple email addresses from which you wish to be able to post messages, but to which you do not wish list- messages sent, you need to add your posting addresses as on "vacation". Please see question 2.3 for instructions on how to set an addres on "vacation".

Q0.4 What format(s) can I post messages in to the list?

Plain text only. No HTML, no text-processor format, no jpeg/gif/tiff/png/xpm/whatever imgages.

    In fact, the listserver will:

  • convert html messages to plain text,
  • remove and discard all attachments from messages.
  • This means, that if your mail-client sends in html by default, you do not need to change anything -- the listserver will convert to txt automagically for you.

It also means, that if you send attachment or html-mails, all it will do is consume your bandwidth, before being discarded by the list-server.

Q0.5 Why is HTML no good? Why no attachments allowed?

    Two reasons:

Firstly, it takes space, bandwidth and is not necessary.

Secondly, a number of list subscribers receive the "digest" version of the mailing list. Attachments and html-formatted mails greatly annoys digest-readers. That's why such is automatically removed by the list software.

Q0.6 What do I do if I want to show my photos to fellow list-members?

Put the photos on a WWW-page (http://www.free.fr and others provide free www-space just for asking) and send an URL to the list.

    Q1

    Basic List Usage

Q1.0 How do I post messages to the list?

    Send your message to olympus@ml.free.fr

Q1.1 How do I subscribe to the list?

Send a message to olympus-request@ml.free.fr. In the subject field, enter "subscribe" (without the quotes).

You will receive an email, on the email address you wish to subscribe to the list, asking that you confirm the subscription. You do so by simply replying to that email.

Q1.2 How do I un-subscribe from the list?

Send a message to olympus-request@ml.free.fr. In the subject field, enter "unset digest" (without the quotes). This will turn off digest mode, and instead you will receive an eMail every time something is posted to the list.

Q1.3 How do I get a "digest" rather than individual list emails?

Send a message to olympus-request@ml.free.fr. In the subject field, enter "set digest" (without the quotes). This will turn on digests, and you will receive a digest however often the server is configured to send them.

Q1.4 How do I get individual emails rather than a "digest"?

Send a message to olympus-request@ml.free.fr. In the subject field, enter "unset digest" (without the quotes). This will turn off digest mode, and instead you will receive an eMail every time something is posted to the list.

    Q2

    Advanced List Usage

Q2.1 How do I get both a "digest" and individual emails?

Send a message to olympus-request@ml.free.fr. In the subject field, enter "set digest2" (without the quotes). This will activate digest mode with normal posting. As each message is posted to the list it will be sent to you, and you will receive a digest as well. This flag should be used INSTEAD of digest, NOT IN ADDITION TO.

Q2.2 I currently get both a digest and individual emails. How do I stop getting digests, but continue getting individual emails?

Send a message to olympus-request@ml.free.fr. In the subject field, enter "unset digest2" (without the quotes). You will go back to receiving normal posts.

Q2.3 How do I see if I am subscribed to the digest, individual. emails or both digest and individual emails.?

Send a message to olympus-request@ml.free.fr. In the subject field, enter "stats" (without the quotes). You will receive an email with the "flags" which are set for you.

    FlagDelivery type
DIGEST You receive the daily digest
DIGEST2 You receive both the daily digest and individual emails
    Neither of the aboveIndividual emails
VACATION You are currently not receiving emails since you are set to be on "vacation"
(Other flags, such as ECHOPOST, may be set. ECHOPOST means, that you get a copy of your own postings to the list. This is, by default, set for all list subscribers).

Q2.4 I am going on vacation. How do I stay subscribed, but avoid getting emails while on vacation?

Send a message to olympus-request@ml.free.fr. In the subject field, enter "vacation days d" (without the quotes). Replace days with the number of days you will be gone. You will remain subscribed to the list but will not receive any eMail for the number of days specified.

Q2.5 How do I subscribe to the list such that I can post from a "secondary email account" (e.g. from work) but not receive emails from the list on that account?

This is really like going on vacation forever (ahh, imagine if only....) from your secondary account.

Send a message to olympus-request@ml.free.fr. In the subject field, enter "set vacation" (without the quotes). You will remain subscribed to the list but will not receive any eMail as long as this flag is set. To start receiving emails on that account, send an email the listar account with a subject of "unset olympus vacation".

    Q3

    List-mum, List-nannies, people

    Q3.1 What's a "list mum"? Who's running this list?

The "list mum" is the person, who's running the list. The position has been occupied by various people during the life of the list.

The tasks of the "list mum" are pretty much the same as those of a "list nanny", with the addition of setting up the list, bribing the hosting ISP personell etc.

    Q3.2 What's a "list nanny"?

A "list nanny" is a person who's helping the list mum keeping the list running. This involves helping with subscriptions/unsubscriptions, changes of email addresses, dealing with "bounces" and all the other technical issues regarding keeping a list running. Typically, if a list subscriber has a problem, he/she emails the list nannies, who then solves the problem.

A list nanny may also, occationally, step in and ask that an off-topic thread be stopped and/or that abusive behavior be corrected. And in case you were wondering, yes: list-nannies can kick people off the list, ban people from subscribing and/or posting etc. This has happened only ONCE ever in the known history of the list (5+ years).

List nannies do not moderate the postings, nor do they decide/control who posts in which threads.

A list nanny is a relatively new thing. Until Jan 2004, the maintenance of the list rested exclusively by the "list mum". With the change of list manager software and hosting, it became possible to share the responsabilities between a small group of dedicated list subscribers. This ensures that when issues arrise, there is a greater chance of having someone around who can address them.

Currently, there are 4 list-nannies (including the list-mom), scattered around the globe.

The list nannies can be reached through email at olympuslistadmin@ml.free.fr.

Q3.3 What about the list archives?

Q3.4 Where does this WWW-space come from?

The address http://www.zuikoholic.com belongs to our valued list member mr. Tom Scales. Tom has kindly donated the right to use both the domain name and the server space associated for this FAQ and other Olympus mailing list related pages.
